HolisticSofa is a screen saver based on a theme from Douglas AdamsÕ
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (available at fine
bookstores everywhere). A situation arises when a fellow moves in
to a new apartment. The hired movers are moving a sofa up the
staircase when it becomes stuck. No matter how they turn and twist
the sofa they cannot get it further up the stairs, and to their
surprise they discover that they cannot even get it back down. One
character from the book attempts to unravel the mystery of the
stuck sofa by running computer simulations of all possible ways in
which the sofa might get into or out of its current position in the
stairwell, only to conclude that both tasks are impossible. This
screen saver is a representation of what such a simulation might
look like.
